: Mine crushers are among the toughest motor applications: heavy start-up loads, impact loading, dust and vibration. Choose the wrong motor and you get frequent trips or a burned-out winding. What motor does a crusher need? This guide covers the selection essentials - torque, power, speed, enclosure and starting method - in plain terms.

High starting torque: crushers start under load with high inertia; the motor should deliver around 1.6-2.0 times rated torque at start-up, otherwise it stalls.
Strong overload capability: ore hardness varies, and instantaneous impact loads can reach 1.5 times rated - the motor must ride through.
High enclosure rating: mine dust is aggressive; IP55 minimum keeps dust out of bearings and cooling passages.
Vibration resistance: the crusher itself vibrates; the motor base and frame need enough stiffness to avoid resonance.
Power: estimate from design output and specific energy - jaw crushers typically consume 0.3-1.2 kWh per tonne. Multiply output by specific energy and add a 20-30% margin. More reliably, follow the crusher manufacturer's recommended motor rating.
Speed: crushers need low speed and high torque; 6-pole (about 980 r/min) or 8-pole (about 740 r/min) motors are typical, further reduced by belt drive. Do not blindly pick a 4-pole high-speed motor - mismatched speed lowers crushing efficiency.
Heavy-load starting draws high current. For crusher motors:
Small motors (up to 30 kW): direct-on-line if the grid allows;
Medium sizes: star-delta or a soft starter to limit inrush;
Large motors (75 kW and above): VFD soft start or MV soft starter recommended - see our motor starting methods comparison.
Explosive dust: coal preparation plants and underground areas need dust ignition-proof or flameproof motors - see YFB4 dust ignition-proof motors.
Altitude derating: above 1000 m, derate the motor for reduced cooling.
Supply quality: mine grids have voltage dips and single-phasing risk; fit a motor protection relay (single-phase, overload, over-temperature).
Crusher motors run hard. Check frame temperature and noise each shift, measure insulation resistance quarterly, and inspect bearings and lubrication annually - the full routine is in our 10-point motor maintenance checklist.
For crushers, mills and conveyor drives in mining, SHANGDIAN (Shanghai Electric Motor Factory) supplies YE3/YE4/YE5 motors and energy-retrofit motors, with variable-frequency PMSM options. Send us the crusher model, output, ore hardness and supply conditions and our engineers will size the motor and starting scheme for you.
