: Sizing the motor for a centrifugal pump is a balance: oversize it and you waste money and run at poor power factor; undersize it and the motor overloads, heats up and burns out. This guide gives a proven three-step kW calculation with formulas and a worked example that buyers and plant engineers can use directly.

Shaft power (Pshaft): the power actually consumed by the pump, set by flow, head and efficiency - the starting point of any calculation.
Motor rated power: the kW on the nameplate; it must be higher than the shaft power.
Safety margin: how much the motor rating exceeds the shaft power. Too little means overload; too much means the motor runs lightly loaded with low power factor and lower efficiency.
Step 1 - calculate pump shaft power. For a centrifugal pump:
Pshaft = Q x H x rho x g / (3600 x eta_pump)
where Q is flow (m3/h), H is head (m), rho is fluid density (1000 kg/m3 for water), g = 9.81 m/s2, and eta_pump is pump efficiency (typically 0.6-0.85). In practice use the simplified form: Pshaft(kW) = Q x H / (367 x eta_pump).
Step 2 - correct for the medium. For slurry, oil or acid with density above water, scale the power by the density ratio: Pshaft' = Pshaft x (rho_medium / 1000).
Step 3 - apply the margin and pick a standard frame. Typical safety factors:
| Shaft power range | Margin factor | Notes |
| Up to 2 kW | 1.5-2.0 | Small pumps start/stop often; keep extra margin |
| 2-5 kW | 1.3-1.5 | - |
| 5-50 kW | 1.15-1.25 | Common for industrial pumps |
| Above 50 kW | 1.10-1.15 | Match large motors closely |
Round up to the standard power steps: 0.75, 1.1, 1.5, 2.2, 3, 4, 5.5, 7.5, 11, 15, 18.5, 22, 30, 37, 45, 55, 75, 90, 110 kW and so on.
A pump station moves 100 m3/h of clean water to a head of 40 m, pump efficiency 0.72:
Pshaft = 100 x 40 / (367 x 0.72) = 15.1 kW. In the 5-50 kW band, apply a margin of 1.2: motor power = 15.1 x 1.2 = 18.1 kW, rounded up to the standard rating of 18.5 kW.
Starting method: pump motors usually start direct-on-line, but for large motors or weak grids consider star-delta or a soft starter - see our motor starting methods comparison.
Variable flow: if the pump must run at varying flow, pair it with a VFD and an inverter-duty motor - see SHANGDIAN variable-frequency motors.
Altitude and ambient: above 1000 m or above 40 C ambient, the motor must be derated; size by the derated output, not the full nameplate.
Pumps and fans are quadratic-torque loads: shaft power falls roughly as the cube of speed, which is why VFD retrofits save so much energy. If you are replacing a pump motor or planning an energy retrofit, SHANGDIAN (Shanghai Electric Motor Factory) supplies YE3/YE4/YE5 low-voltage motors and variable-frequency PMSM packages; send us your flow, head, medium and site conditions and we will size the motor for you.
